A 20 minute crash course reviewing the essentials of computer programming

For those interested in how I created the videos: For the logo and intro I used After Effects templates from The bulk of the clips come from the public domain Prelinger Archives available at The music for the intro was created with GarageBand loops and I used Final Cut Pro X to piece it all together and add the titles.

Well Done. I’ve just one question: in your opinion the use of continue and break doesn’t break the structured programming? Or Maybe is all about performance? Thank you very much

    • Hillel says :

That’s a good point and for a long time I stayed away from using them myself. Programming is all about trade offs, you give in one area to get in another. I agree that their use should generally be restricted but in this particular area I think code readability wins out (I hate having to scroll to the right to read code).

Truly inspiring! Would you mind if I circulated to some of the people responsible for training at my company? I could see these being a great intro for our Developer School classes taught to new hires.

Great to hear from you, hope you’ve been well. That’d be amazing. My goal is to try to share them with as many people as possible, you’d be doing me a favor by passing them along.

      • Jack Warner says :

Thank Hillel – I’m going to share these with our talent development folks and put it out on our Yammer thread. I really think you’ve made fundamental yet complex concepts accessible to beginner programmers with these videos. I hope they show them in our Developer School – I’ll let you know!!

Simple and good.. John Sonmez of “Making the Complex Simple” forwarded your blog and I am glad that he shared it with me..

Keep the good work and keep them coming…

    • Hillel says :

That’s great to hear, John’s an excellent writer. I’m happy you were able to come across the videos.

While I don’t think I have enough material for an ongoing series, I’m slowly starting to work on a coda…

      I’ll keep you posted
